5 Facts You Need to Know about Water Before it's Gone
Let’s face it; water is something most of take for granted. This substance accounts for 75% of our bodies’ composition as well as the planet we live on. Yet, only 1% of the water on Earth is drinkable. If there was ever a paradox, this is definitely one of them.
Given this survivalist supply and demand perspective, it is worth emphasizing the need for strict conservation measures on both a global and local front. People need to be informed about what is going on and take action on an individual level to preserve this precious resource.
In other words, if we all want to continue drinking water and using it for our everyday needs (e.g. cooking, cleaning, etc.); it is time to get serious about conserving water! H2O should never be taken for granted, so with that, here are a few fun facts about water we thought you might want to know before it disappears.
If you live in California or the Southwest region of the United States in general, then you can fully appreciate the following list (if you are unaware, the state recently had a major drought).
The Natural Resources is disappearing - interesting facts about water
1. Bottled water can be extremely wasteful and expensive – To put this fact into greater perspective and hopefully eradicate excessive spending habits, consider this: bottled water requires more H2O than it holds. Whereas tap water averages only $.002 per gallon, the bottles on the shelves at your local convenience store require up to 11 times more to make than what you are actually drinking.
2. We are indulging in water from the last ice age – Did you ever think you might be drinking water from Earth’s last glacial period? It is true; since geologists are running out of areas to pump groundwater and the high rate at which is being extracted, some of the aquifers contain water that has been on the planet for 10,000 years or more. The science behind H2O is crazy, isn’t it?
3. More water pumping = more natural disasters– Imagine idling in traffic on a busy street, only to have the road collapse around you. Everything from sinkholes to earthquakes to landslides has increased at a shocking rate as a result of excessive groundwater pumping. The soil beneath the surface becomes weak and caves in; not exactly a pretty picture!
4. An iceberg towing company exists – If it was not for his wealth, one Saudi Arabian prince would not have been able to launch his very own iceberg towing business. Iceberg Transport International (ITT) was started by Mohammed al Faisal in the 1970s as a means of melting and processing icebergs into freshwater. Despite being an ingenious “landmark” effort, the plan was deemed unfeasible at an international conference from an economic stance.
5.Water on Mars – Interstellar water extraction may be on the horizon, as scientists recently discovered that Mars has many aquifers lying just 1 kilometer below its surface. In light of our planet’s current water crisis, you can bet NASA is working hard to figure out a way to get these plans underway!
H2O is the essential key to life as we know it; the above facts about water are a testament to the vitality of this precious resource, and why we should all have some more appreciation for its conservation. This is crucial to the survival of our planet. So, always remember to do your part (even if you cannot afford to tow an iceberg)!
