Plastic Free July: 10 Simple Ways to Say Goodbye to Single-Use Plastic

The latest figures highlight the scale of the challenge. Globally, around one million single-use plastic bottles are consumed every minute, yet only 9% are recycled. It is estimated that by 2050 there could be more plastic than fish in our oceans, while the 12 billion tonnes of plastic already in landfills may take more than 400 years to break down.

At Waterlogic, our commitment to sustainability is ongoing. We work every day to provide access to cleaner, safer, better-tasting water while helping to reduce environmental impact through responsible water management, lower carbon emissions and a more sustainable approach to everyday hydration.

If, like us, you care about protecting the planet, here are 10 simple changes you can make to your daily routine this Plastic Free July.

1. Carry a Reusable Water Bottle

Replace disposable plastic bottles at home, at work and on the go. Investing in a reusable stainless-steel or glass bottle is one of the easiest ways to cut plastic waste while saving money. Insulated bottles can also keep your water cooler for longer during the summer months.

2. Use Reusable Shopping Bags

Swap single-use carrier bags for reusable fabric or recycled-material alternatives. They are more durable, easy to fold away and convenient to keep with you, making it easier to avoid unnecessary plastic waste.

3. Buy Loose Fruit and Vegetables

Packaging accounts for approximately 40% of global plastic waste. Choosing loose fruit and vegetables instead of heavily packaged alternatives is a simple way to significantly reduce the amount of unnecessary plastic entering your household.

4. Avoid Plastic Cutlery, Plates and Straws

Summer picnics and outdoor gatherings often lead to increased use of disposable tableware. Opt for reusable alternatives made from materials such as bamboo or stainless steel. If reusable options are not practical, choose compostable or biodegradable products instead.

5. Choose Refill Products

From household cleaners to food products, refill stations are becoming increasingly popular. Reusing existing containers helps reduce packaging waste and encourages more sustainable consumption habits.

Storing food in reusable glass containers also helps keep it fresh while reducing reliance on disposable packaging.

6. Switch to Solid Personal Care Products

Solid shampoos, soaps and deodorants generally require little or no packaging and often last longer than their liquid equivalents due to their concentrated formulations. Making the switch can significantly reduce bathroom plastic waste without compromising performance.

7. Bring Your Own Takeaway Containers

Whether it is lunch at work or a takeaway meal, choose businesses that prioritise sustainable packaging. When possible, bring your own reusable containers and decline disposable cutlery if you do not need it. This helps reduce waste while encouraging more responsible consumption.

8. Choose Sustainable Clothing

Natural fabrics such as organic cotton, linen and hemp are typically produced using lower-impact methods and often require less water than conventional alternatives. Choosing durable, sustainably sourced clothing can also help reduce the release of microplastics associated with synthetic fabrics.

9. Install a Drinking Water Filtration System

One of the most effective ways to reduce plastic waste is to stop relying on bottled water. Installing a water filtration system at home or in the workplace can improve the taste and quality of drinking water while eliminating the need for plastic bottles and the environmental impact associated with their production and transportation.

At Waterlogic, we believe that providing access to filtered drinking water is a practical step towards reducing single-use plastic consumption and supporting a more sustainable future.

10. Share Your Experience and Inspire Others

Tell your friends, family and online communities why you have chosen to reduce your use of single-use plastics. Small actions become powerful when they inspire others to make changes too.

Taking part in Plastic Free July is an opportunity to reflect on our lifestyle choices and begin building habits that contribute to a cleaner, healthier world. Even the smallest changes can make a meaningful difference.
