Waterlogic continues to invest in mental health support for its employees as we acknowledge World Mental Health Day 2021
October 10th marks World Mental Health Day, an annual day of recognition dedicated to promoting the understanding of mental health education, awareness, and advocacy. Raising the profile of mental health conditions and removing the stigmas often associated with them can help those people who may be struggling to speak up and get the support they need.
Launched by the World Federation for Mental Health (WFMH) in 1992 and held every year since the day is themed to shine a spotlight on a particular aspect of mental health with its own unique set of challenges. This year it’s ‘Mental Health in an Unequal World’, drawing attention to the fact that access to mental health services remains unequal: between 75% to 95% of people with mental disorders in low- and middle-income countries are unable to access mental health services at all, and access in high-income countries is not much better. Commitment to mental health support at Waterlogic
At Waterlogic, the mental well-being of our employees is something we take very seriously. Having an environment and culture that offers help and support to our employees allows us to help prevent issues from escalating into something more serious. We also recognise when it’s time for professional help to step in and take over.
According to mental health training enterprise MHFA England, 1 in 5 people will take a day off work due to stress, with a total of 72 million days lost in total due to mental health. And those with long-term mental health conditions are twice as likely to lose their job each year. These numbers underline the impact mental health can have on businesses and individuals.
In 2020, ten UK-based Waterlogic employees were appointed Mental Health First Aiders (MHFA) following on from training they had received from MHFA England in 2019 and since then this number has increased to 16. All employees in the UK and Ireland have been shown how to reach out to someone subtly and confidentially with any personal concerns or issues. Although not professionals, the MHFA are available to listen, be empathetic, provide comfort and compassion, and point people to professional help if needed.
UK employees also have access to Waterlogic’s Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) via the PerkPal website, offering completely confidential advice on a range of subjects including structured counselling and legal advice and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
In Australia, the ‘In This Together’ programme provides employees with online access to an eight-part series of self-help modules plus weekly practical tips to support mental health and wellbeing. Each module is emailed to employees and covers topics such as breathing, staying connected and keeping routines, and includes a mental health assessment to help employees take steps to improve their mental well-being. Since launching in April 2020, to date, the programme homepage had received over 600 visits, and the eight modules received 1,000+ views from the 280 Waterlogic employees with individual access to them.

A greater understanding and acceptance in recent years of mental health as a serious condition has led to the creation and expansion of organisations and charities who are there to offer professional and confidential support should you or someone you know need it.
