The drinking water supply in the U.S. is far better than in many countries, and all public systems are required to follow the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s standards, however, municipal facilities’ systems are vast and aging with many potential contamination points. Our own faucets are increasingly cited as a source of pseudomonas and Legionella. In addition, cities also run the risk (though rare), of having to issue boil water notices due to outbreaks of illness related to a drinking water contaminant, such as the recent boil water alert due to the toxic water spill in The Animas River of Colorado. What does this mean for us? This means that purifying our water the proper way is a crucial step that should be taken before pouring our drinking water into our glass.

Waterlogic's own Lisa VanWyngarden, senior marketing manager, worked with Water Technology to discuss how a combination of Reverse Osmosis (RO), UV sanitization and antimicrobial materials of construction serve as a great barrier against impurities in your drinking water.

POU Treatments

Within the article, Lisa discusses how reverse osmosis (RO), a process that forces water through a semi-permeable membrane under pressure, can be an effective way of leaving contaminants behind and yielding more pure and healthy drinking water - but is this process alone adequate to ensure safety?

Most reverse osmosis systems are effective at removing some of the worst things you can imagine in water like arsenic, lead, pesticides, and cysts. While the semipermeable membrane within a RO system serves as an excellent barrier, the pore size grows with time as contaminants are continually pressured against it, but in combination with POU treatments, this can be very beneficial. By filtering and purifying water at the “Point of Use” (POU) you're also helping to lessen other points of possible contamination following RO filtration that could continue all the way to the faucet and your drinking glass.

Final Barrier

Lisa goes on to discuss how recent technology developed by Waterlogic provides the solution for the final barrier right at the point of dispense.
